A Support Free 3D Print They Said… They Were Wrong | Time lapse 3D Printing Fail MC Escher

While looking for 3D Printable optical illusions to print and time lapse I came upon this 3D model of M.C. Escher’s ‘Belvedere” by 3E8(Link Below) The creator took a 2D drawing of the Belvedere that already boggled the mind and rendered it as a supposedly printable 3D model. I was so excited to get this model in my printer. Several months later, I have come close to successfully printing this design. This is the closest. As you will see there so many things that will make a 3D printer struggle such as steep overhangs and a ton of weight held up on those very thin parts. Maybe someone out there can get this model of Escher’s Belvedere to print all the way through successfully. As for me I am content on this video and a 3D printing lesson learned. If it has been on Thingiverse for awhile and has 0 successful “Makes”, beware ye who enter here. I hope you at least enjoy this 3D time lapse, fail and all, I know I did.

How time lapse 3D Printing Works
After each .2 MM layer( That is barely thicker than a sheet of paper!) the 3D printer pauses, moves the extruder to the rear of the printer, takes a photo and then continues the print giving the illusion of the print appearing from thin air. This is essentially a stop motion video of the entire print shrunk down to a few seconds.
Print and Filament Details
This video was filmed using Octoprint connected to a Raspberry Pi B with a 1080p capable webcam Camera. My printer is a trusty Creality Ender 3 Pro that can be purchased these days for around $200.
