Who Is The 3D Printed Teacher?
Welcome to the 3D Printed Teacher, the home for my favorite 3D Printed time lapse videos. I have taught middle school tech classes for nearly two decades in Orlando, Florida. If you are like me and want to find the best 3D prints around, please subscribe to enjoy my 3D print videos and the occasional 3D printing failure.

Need Some 3D Printing Advice?
New to 3D Printing and need some help? I offer a variety of 3D printer classes on my website https://3dprintedteacher.com/courses/3d-printing-classes-online/ My newest class is a self-paced course for young 3D printer owners age 9-13 that would like to learn how to get the most out of their 3D Printer.

My 3D Printing Origin Story
I got my start in 3D printing when my principal offered to buy me a 3D printer for the classroom. I said "No, I'll just end up printing a bunch of plastic toys" 10 years later I have 4 3D printers in my office and love sharing my 3D prints with other 3D printing enthusiasts.

3DPrintedTeacher
Does this 3D print need supports? Clearly.. yes. So I set my 3D printer's slicer Cura to do the opposite of what logic and all 3D printing common sense dictates, I turned supports off. I did give the 3D print a fighting chance with a raft under the legs. I am learning that 3D printing fails is actually much much harder than I thought. My CR-10 S4 3D printer seems to want to complete the 3D print successfully or fail right from the first later. I have an whole series of these hopefully humorous 3D prints on the way so stay tuned!

Help me convince my wife that 3D printing is a useful hobby and please subscribe and like the video. Note: I am not 100% sure this video helps my case.

This time lapse was taken on my current favorite printer(meaning it is the one that is working), the CR-10 S4. With a heated bed that measures 400 x 400 x 400, I will be printing some huge models.

How time lapse 3D Prints Work
After each .2 MM layer( That is barely thicker than a sheet of paper!) the 3D printer pauses, moves the extruder to the rear of the printer, takes a photo and then continues the print giving the illusion of the print appearing from thin air.

3D Printed optical illusions, one look at my channel and you'll see I love to 3D print them. This optical illusion model by francfalco on Thingiverse is one of my favorites of all time. I 3D printed this in silver glossy PLA for an awesome shine. I admit the near overexposure in the middle of the time lapse was a mistake but I actually love the effect!

This is my first time lapse on my CR-10 S4. With a heated bed that measures 400 x 400 x 400, I will be printing some huge models. Please subscribe to see my upcoming 3 foot tall 3D printed Groot time lapse. He is amazing!

You have never seen a 3D Printed Photo lithophane time lapsed like this! An awesome Spider-Man No Way Home preview from Sony Pictures / Entertainment Weekly is transformed into a 3D printed lithophane photograph with a unique back-lit method of recording lithophane time lapses. For this Spider-Man No Way Home photo, I used https://lithophanemaker.com/ which is a great free tool to create your own custom Lithophanes.

Lithophane Cura Settings
For this lithophane I decided to use different settings in Cura than the usual 100% infill required. Instead this lithophane is set at 99 walls in Cura which results in a slightly faster printing time and the same quality. Most sites suggest a .15 layer height or smaller, but I am very happy with the .2mm height. This Spider-Man No Way Home lithophane clocked in at just under 10 hours of print time. As always the rights to Spider-Man No Way Home photos belong solely to Marvel and in this case Entertainment for their photo exclusive used to make the lithophane.

Here is the process I used to get this Spiderman lithophane to print correctly
1) Purchase a clip on LED light with a long neck so you can position it behind the 3D printer bed to start the time lapse.
2) I used American Filament's Classic White filament that is actually designed for printing lithophanes!
https://americanfilament.us/products/lithophane-white-af-pla-1-75mm
3) I boosted the exposure in in my Octolapse time lapse settings in Octoprint to 371 and upped my gain as well
4) I used the yellow light on the LED to really bring out the details in the 3D print.

This is the first of several 3D printed Spiderman lithophanes I plan leading up to the release of Marvel's Spiderman No Way Home in December. Time lapsing this Spiderman 3D printed lithophane was a lot harder than I initially thought. I figured I had it mastered when I 3D printed Spiderman overnight a few days ago, but I woke up to find the time lapse Marvel 3D print ruined when the sun had risen and completely overexposed the final images. In order to get a lithophane to properly time lapse the room must maintain the same darkness for the entire print or risk falling into the same trap I did.

I have more 3D printed lithophanes on the way. If you like what you see, please consider subscribing by the link below

I finally solved my challenge of 3D printing a lithophane and I love how this Endgame time lapse came out!(Link to the 3D model at end of description) At first I thought 3D printing a lithophane time lapse would be a piece of cake. Boy was I wrong! Each time I 3D printed this Marvel Endgame lithophane I either:
1) Used the wrong white PLA filament. Filament made for lithophanes actually makes a difference!
2) Massively overexposed the 3D print and got mostly blinded by the led
3) Underexposed the time lapse and got a boring image with no Tony Stark to be seen.
4) Watched as the lithophane failed midway through and ended up being a pile of 3D printed Marvel Spaghetti

3D Time Lapsing A Lithophane: My Solution
I finally got the the recipe down on how to get a 3D printed lithophane to be a success.
1) I purchased one of these clip on lights from Amazon and attached it to the old location of my 3D printers feeder stepper so that the light would rise as the lithophane prints. I angled the light so that it would start below the printer bed and slowly rise as the 3D print comes to life.
2) I used American Filament's Classic White filament that is actually designed for printing lithophanes!
3) I boosted the exposure in in my Octolapse settings to 371 and upped my gain as well
4) I used the yellow light on the LED to really bring out the details in the 3D print.
After a whole lot of trial and error I got the time lapse to successfully print!

From the number of 3D prints I have in my channel done in spiralize outer contour, also known as vase mode you should know that this is one of my favorite modes to create my time lapses in. Simply put, vase mode allows the creation of a large print in a fraction of the time. The "Wavy Bowl" 3D model from Ferjerez gave me the opportunity to try out a time lapse recorded from above. I am pretty happy with how it came out!

This breathtaking 17 cm tall 3D printed vase only took a little over 4 hours with Spiralize Outer Contour activated! The Spiralize Outer contour setting in Cura, also known as vase mode in other 3D slicers clearly offers the best bang for your Octoprint time lapse buck when it comes to size and speed. Time lapsing a vase mode 3D print come to life is almost as much fun as seeing the finished product.

Remember to set the printer in Cura to Spiralize mode or you will end up with a sold block instead of a vase! Like what you see?

I have to say that creating 3D print Halloween time lapses is one of my favorite 3D printing activities of the year but I was looking for something a bit unusual to print. The Furry Christmas Tree by 3DCentralVA is an amazing time lapse, but its October! So the Halloween Tree was born! This 3D print uses a technique called Drooloops to drip the PLA filament in mid-air forming little loops that look so much like a real Christmas er... Halloween Tree. (Thingiverse Link At The Bottom)

Stay tuned for my next Halloween time lapse! Better yet, Subscribe to the channel. I really appreciate it!
https://www.youtube.com/c/3dprintedteacher?sub_confirmation=1

How I Made It
I used the original 3D tree model from Thingiverse and remixed it with Okapee's 3D printed pumpkin with no support needed to create this Halloween Monstrosity. I will post the remix to Thingiverse later this weekend, otherwise just get out your Orange PLA filament and start printing!

3D Printing Suggestions
A couple tips for this design to be successful. In Cura make sure to set your layers to .3mm and no more than 10% infill. To make the dripping filament really work its wonders print this at around 40mm/s and your tree will be a success(Even if its green).

Huge 3D Prints for Halloween don't need to take days to 3D print. This 3D printed hand time lapse only took about 6 hours to 3D print and measures in at over 200mm tall. The Thingiverse 3D printing artist that designed this print, FOR63, provided a variety of hands that can easily be mounted to the wall for a Halloween party, buried for your Halloween display and I have had a great time using these hands as "tiny arms" to scare my children. I had a create time creating this 3D print time lapse.
